Women’s Aid in Luton is the sole provider of refuge accommodation in Luton for women and children fleeing domestic violence and abuse. We are also the lead Partner in a project to deliver refuge to women with additional support needs, such as poor mental health and drug and alcohol dependencies; these issues can often be as a direct result of trauma brought on by the experience of domestic violence and abuse.

With the current challenges facing our sector, we are focused on securing on-going funding, providing more stability to the organization following recent staff turnover and looking to establish some certainty that the service we provide continues to be ‘fit for purpose’ for our clients and our stakeholders.

We are looking to strengthen our existing Board of Trustees through recruiting additional people to sit on our Board. We are particularly looking to recruit a Chairperson to provide leadership and direction to the Board and individuals who have expertise in all aspects of strategy and leadership.

For the role of Chairperson, you will:

  • Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees in their role of setting the strategy and policy for the Organisation
  • Plan the annual cycle of Board meetings; ensuring that agendas are set for each meeting in accordance with the constitution of the Organisation
  • Act as a representative of WAIL at meetings and functions and as a spokesperson for the Organisation at meetings/functions or in the media
  • Provide line-management to the Senior Management Team within the Organisation
  • Liaise with employees to keep an overview of the activities of the Organisation
  • Conducting performance appraisals for members of the Senior Management team and ensuring that the performance appraisal process is conducted throughout the Organisation
  • Participate on appointment, disciplinary and grievance panels as required.

At the heart of our service is the desire to provide safe, secure and confidential accommodation for women and their children and give them the practical and emotional support that they need to start afresh. Our dedicated team of specialist staff who support women accessing our services and act as an advocate for them as they empower themselves to build a new life for themselves and their family.
