Children and young people service

Domestic abuse doesn’t just impact adults, children and young people feel it deeply too. Whether they’ve witnessed violence, experienced fear at home, or had to leave everything behind, the effects can be long lasting.

At Women’s Aid Luton, we see every child who comes into refuge as a survivor in their own right. They have experienced trauma, loss, and change – and our role is to support them through every step of their journey.

Supporting Children as Individuals

When children arrive in refuge, they may have left behind their home, school, friends, toys, pets, and extended family. We provide essentials, new toys, and books to help them feel welcome. Our Children and Family team supports each child and their mother to regulate emotions, rebuild trust, and create moments of safety and joy.

Emotional and Therapeutic Support

Children receive one-to-one or small group sessions to build trust, name feelings, and manage big emotions. Creative tools such as the “Worry Monster” and inclusive books support emotional literacy. We also offer Drawing and Talking therapy for ages 4+, which helps with sleep, friendships, and reducing anxiety.

Alongside this, we run “You and Me, Mum,” a programme helping mothers understand the impact of domestic abuse and strengthen bonds. Children also benefit from regular celebrations, trips, cultural events, and visits from Hildi, our qualified therapy dog.

Advocacy, Connection, and Breaking the Cycle

We work with families to assess needs, make referrals, and collaborate with schools, nurseries, and family workers for holistic support. Shared activities between children and mothers reduce fear and strengthen relationships.

Our team ensures children feel listened to and understood, while also advocating for mothers through legal advice and school support. By creating trust and connection, we aim to end the cycle of domestic abuse.
