Need help?

Cover your tracks

If you’re worried about someone finding out that you’re getting help or looking for information about abuse, there are steps you can take to protect your privacy. This page will show you how to stay safe online and offline.

Why it matters

People who abuse often try to control others — even tracking what websites they visit or who they speak to. Taking steps to protect your activity can help you feel more in control and reduce risk.

How to stay safe online

Clear Your Browsing History

Delete your history regularly, especially pages about domestic abuse. In most browsers, you can do this from Settings > History.

Use Private or Incognito Mode

This stops your browser from saving the websites you visit. It’s helpful when looking for support. If you click on the 3 dots in the top right-hand corner of the screen you can choose private window.

Be Careful with Emails

If you’re using a shared or monitored email account:

  • Create a new one that only you can access
  • Use a different name and don’t save passwords

Check Your Devices

Make sure your phone or computer isn’t being tracked. Look out for:

  • Apps you didn’t install
  • Location sharing turned on
  • Unusual behaviour or battery drain

If you suspect monitoring, try to use a safe device, like a friend’s phone, when seeking help.

Staying safe offline

  • Keep important documents hidden or stored safely if you’re planning to leave
  • Avoid discussing your plans where you could be overheard
  • Keep an emergency bag hidden with essentials like ID, keys, money, and any medication
  • Don’t leave written notes about your plans, addresses, or phone numbers that could be found
  • Turn off location services on your mobile phone
  • Plan safe routes in advance if you’re going somewhere for help
  • Avoid using shared bank or travel cards that could be tracked
