Making a safety plan

You deserve to feel safe. Discover how a safety plan can support you in dangerous situations. Learn how to make one that works for you.

What is a safety plan?

A safety plan is a personalised, practical plan that can help you stay safe if you’re living with, planning to leave, or have already left an abusive relationship. It includes steps you can take to protect yourself and your children.

Why does a safety plan matter?

Abuse can make things unpredictable. Having a safety plan can help you feel more in control and prepared if things get worse or if you need to leave quickly.

Things to think about

Your safety plan might include:

  • Trusted people you can call or go to in an emergency
  • A safe place to keep important documents and keys
  • How to leave your home safely if needed
  • Code words to use with children or friends
  • Packing a bag with essentials in case you need to leave quickly
  • Keeping your phone charged and knowing how to delete your call/search history

You don’t need to do this alone. We can help you build a plan that fits your situation and needs.

When to make a plan

You can make a plan at any time, whether you’re staying, leaving, or still unsure. The most important thing is that it works for you.
