Women's Aid Luton

Need help?

Refuge

Refuge is a safe and confidential space for women and children escaping domestic abuse. At Women’s Aid Luton, we provide not only secure accommodation, but also emotional and practical support to help you rebuild your life.

What is a refuge?

A refuge is a temporary safe place where women and their children can stay after leaving their relationship. It is a protected environment where you can begin to recover emotionally and plan for your future.

What to expect in refuge

  • Privacy and safety: Our locations are kept confidential, with secure access to ensure your safety
A Welcoming and Supportive Environment: You’ll be living with other women who have experienced similar situations
  • Dedicated staff: Our trained team are here to listen, guide, and support you through every step
  • Your own room: Every family and woman will have their own room. Some facilities, like the kitchen and lounge area, will be shared, but we work hard to make sure they feel safe and comfortable
  • Support for your children: Safe spaces to play, support with school places, and emotional support are all available to help children adjust
  • Help navigating your options: We can support you with housing, benefits, legal advice, and next steps for a more stable future

Support you’ll receive:

While in refuge, you’ll have access to:

  • Emotional support and counselling
  • Help with housing applications
  • Guidance around legal and immigration issues
  • Practical help with finances
  • Access to health services and community support

Using our extensive network of partners and contacts, our skilled team can signpost women toward specialist services and expert support outside of WAL, connecting women with other organisations and agencies capable of supporting their safety, ensuring an understanding of their human and legal rights and empowering them to make change.
