Ifeoma’s Story

“Thank you for caring about me, I really think that without your help I would not be here today and for that I am so grateful.”

Ifeoma was referred to WAL’s telephone helpline due to the abuse she was experiencing at the hands of her husband. She had experienced sexual and physical abuse and did not have access to her own money. She wanted to stay in the area because of her job and her support network but although her husband was subject to a restraining order Ifeoma was frightened for her safety and that of her child.

How did we support Ifeoma?

  • Listened to and believed Ifeoma
  • Liaised with the Homeless Team to ensure she had somewhere safe to live
  • Supported her to make a safety plan
  • Organised a free appointment for legal advice
  • Supported her to open her own bank account and have access to her own mobile phone
  • Helped her to change all her passwords and set up a personal email account

With WAL’s support Ifeoma is now living independently and free from fear. She was able to continue working and her and her child are slowly rebuilding their lives.
